Friday, March 1, will mark the beginning of Virgin Islands History Month. Act 6802, passed in 2006, created the month-long recognition of Virgin Islands history and history makers.

“Each March, we have the opportunity to revisit our important and interesting local history,” Gittens said. “I urge parents, teachers and our many culture bearers to take this opportunity to teach our children more about the Virgin Islands. Our historic records include many role models and important events and that, once shared, help instill a real sense of pride in our youth.”

Virgin Islanders have not thoroughly exercised their rights as stipulated by the “Treaties & Resolutions” to accomplishing Self-Determination/Decolonization.  A group of “grass roots” Virgin Islanders have come together and created "A People's Historical Journey To Self-Determination & Decolonization” to go beyond the Centennial activities of 2017. This journey will explore the historical events that had significant impact on Self-Determination of the Virgin Islands prior to and after the transfer. Our goal is to bring an end to the 100 years of white government rule of the People of the Virgin Islands through and by the establishment of a Political Status and Constitution of the Virgin Islands by 2021.

The payment was made on the day of the transfer of the islands, Saturday 31st March 1917, at precisely 11 o’clock local time in Washington DC. The American Secretary of State Robert Lansing presented the Danish ambassador Constantin Brun with a cheque for the agreed sum of 25 million dollars payable in gold– ”in payment of cession of the Danish West Indian Islands to the United States”, as is written on the cheque, which was signed by the Secretary of Treasury William McAdoo.

"In early 1917, Germany sent Mexico a coded message promising portions of U.S. land in return for Mexico joining World War I against the United States. The message was intercepted by Britain, translated, and shown to the United States. This brought the war to U.S. soil, giving the U.S. a real reason to enter the war on the side of the Allies."

(VIYAC) - Is a broad based coalition of organizations and individuals committed to increasing political and civic involvement and overall voter participation of Virgin Islanders, ages 14-30. VIYAC is youth led and dedicated to educating young voters who have not been full participants in the political processes, namely the electoral and legislative systems. VIYAC aims, through civic education, voter literacy, and leadership development training, to educate youth and young adults on how to identify issues, to influence public policy and how to become a more effective participant in the democratic governance of the Virgin Islands (U.S.).
